וַיִּקַּח־לוֹ לֶמֶךְ שְׁתֵּי נָשִׁים

And Lemech took two wives for himself.

Bereishit 4:19

Thursday, 8 October 2026 — 27 Tishrei 5787 Today’s Chitas: Bereishit 4:19–22

The text presents more than a private choice made by Lemech. Rashi describes a society that separated aspects of a woman that should have been honoured together: her personhood, her beauty, her fertility and her place in the covenant.

In a Chabad adaptation of a teaching of the Rebbe, Daily Wisdom explains that this way of thinking reduces the other person to a function. Yet a relationship intended by Hashem asks each person to recognise what the other brings and to unite different strengths in the service of a shared purpose. This reflection is an editorial adaptation; it is not a verbatim quotation from the Rebbe.

Takeaway Do not ask only: “What role does this person fulfil?” Ask: “What unique strength do they bring, and how can I honour it?”
