וַיִּתְהַלֵּךְ חֲנוֹךְ אֶת־הָאֱלֹהִים

“And Enoch walked with G-d.”

Bereishit 5:22

The Torah says that Enoch walked with G-d. The tradition recounted in Daily Wisdom describes him as a shoemaker: even in the stitching of his shoes, he united the spiritual dimensions of creation.

The Rebbe draws a lesson from this for our everyday activities. Work, shopping, preparing a meal or doing someone a favour can become places of encounter with Hashem. The intention we bring gives new meaning to the practical act.

Serving Hashem can therefore take the form of honest work, care given to a detail or a desire to make someone’s life easier.

Today, choose a familiar task. Before you begin, take a moment to give it an intention: “May this action serve Hashem and bring goodness.”
